7 Essential Items to Bring to Your Family Photos Session

what to Bring to Your Family Photos

You’ve checked everything off the list from when and where to what everyone’s wearing. Now it comes down to the very few last-minute details of what to bring to your family photos session. Look, you know your family the best and what’s going to create a smooth-sailing family photo session. But as a photographer who has shot LOTS of family sessions, these are the items that I consider the most essential and most helpful at a family session.

1. Bring comfy shoes for walking between spots.

Depending on the location you choose for your family session, bringing a pair of walking shoes can be really helpful. This keeps your shoes for the photos clean and it just makes for an easier time.

2. Snacks for the kids that won’t stain.

If energy starts waning it is really nice to have a little something on hand for the kids, to boost them up and satisfy any hungry spots. Oftentimes, it is best not to tell the kids before that you have a special snack or treat for them because it can become a distraction. Also, mess-free snacks are a must!! Say no to Cheetos and Skittles and yes to Cheerios, plain crackers, and mini marshmallows.

3. Makeup and hair stuff for touch-ups.

Bring lipstick, a hairbrush, bobby pins, etc. Sometimes you use it and sometimes you don’t. It’s just nice to have on hand for a just-in-case kind of moment.

4. Tissues for running noses.

If you’ve got little ones this is definitely a must. Especially as we go into fall and winter, I feel like we always have at least one kid with a runny nose. So don’t leave without the tissues!

5. Extra diapers, wipes.

You’ve definitely got this one covered, but here is just a friendly reminder. Never leave home without them!

6. A change of clothes.

I love to photograph families and kids climbing on logs, walking through water, and interacting with their surroundings. It makes some of the most beautiful photos. But it also makes for wet clothes, so an extra change of clothes can be nice for the drive home.

7. A toy your child loves.

If your child is a little nervous going into photos or is a little shyer, it can be really helpful to let them hold onto one of their favorite toys. It usually makes them feel more comfortable and open. I’m really good at working with them and making sure we have shots with and without the toy. Try to choose a toy that will photograph well though. A small wooden train looks nicer in photos than a huge superhero man!

Don’t forget, I am available throughout the whole process from booking your session to receiving your photos. If you have questions or concerns about what to bring to your family photos session please reach out to me and we can work out what is best for you and your family. Let’s take beautiful and fun photos together! Check out some photos from past family sessions!
