After having a baby, your body is probably going to feel pretty different for a little while. I know after each of my babes, it took me a while to feel like me again. I have lots of ideas on what to wear for newborn photos and fresh 48 photos to feel comfortable and more like you!
What to Wear for 48 Fresh Photos
Fresh 48 Sessions do not use many props- instead, I focus on the hospital experience. Tiny armbands, blue/pink striped blankets, and teeny hats. It’s all about your experience after birth. We will not do any outfit changes but instead focus on keeping baby wrapped and warm while we work.
For Baby
I recommend a plain white long-sleeved onesie. It looks classic, neutral, and keeps baby warm–I would bring a newborn and a 0-3 month size just in case. We want to make sure it looks like it fits and they’re not squashed in or swimming in it. Feel free to bring a hat or headband if you’d like. I’ll bring a plain white swaddle, and I love to use the hospital swaddles to capture that look. If you have a special blanket or swaddle, please have that on hand too.
For Mama
Wear what you feel comfortable in. Many women choose to wear a nice bathrobe or a maternity maxi dress. You want something comfortable and soft for baby while she snuggles against you. If you feel up to it, a shower before I come can make you feel more yourself again. If you like to wear make-up, apply whatever minimum makes you feel comfortable. These pictures document the beauty of the exhaustion of having a brand-new baby. Here is a Pinterest board to give you some ideas too!
For Dad
Plain t-shirts, polo shirts, or button-ups in neutral colors will look best and most classic. Please avoid anything with writing or logos. If you’re comfortable with skin-to-skin photos, I love capturing dads loving on their babies.
For Siblings
Plain and neutral colors will look best and more classic. However, I love a good “big sister” or “big brother” t-shirt. Having them comfortable is the most important while meeting their new sibling.
I would have a bag at home packed with clothes for the siblings to wear. Then grandma or whoever is taking care of them can easily put them into the clothes you prefer. And a bag at the hospital with you, your spouse, and baby’s clothes. I just stuck mine in a large ziplock or travel cube so I could pull it out once we were ready to do pictures.
What to Wear for Newborn Photos
Keep in mind that I’m documenting a day in your life, so keep it real by wearing what you’re most comfortable in and by being yourself. I encourage neutral colors, steering away from t-shirts with logos or bold patterns. Casual clothing is perfect and bare feet look most natural in a home setting. The house will be warmer than usual so dress appropriately for the temperature.
For Mama
Consider a light flowy shirt, maxi dress, or a pretty cotton gown that will be both comfortable and soft while you are cuddling with your new baby. Here’s a Pinterest board with some inspiration on what to wear for newborn photos. Primp yourself just a bit; enough to photograph well but still be you and casual.
For Baby
I recommend naked, in just a diaper, or in a neutral-colored onesie (I think white looks classic). I realize there are tons of really cute baby clothes but it’s rare to find any that fit properly or that won’t be distracting in photos.
For Dad
Again, plain t-shirts, polo shirts, or button-ups in neutral colors will look best and most classic. Please avoid anything with writing or logos.
For Siblings
Again, plain and neutral colors will look best and more classic. Having them comfortable is the most important while hanging with their newest sibling!
