With so many families scheduling their fall photos, I often get asked the same fall family photos questions: What should we wear? When is the best time for fall family pictures? How do we keep kids happy during a session? As a Fresno family photographer, I’ve rounded up the most commonly asked questions about fall photo sessions and answered them with my best tips so you’ll feel confident, prepared, and excited for your own fall family pictures this season.
22 Fall Family Photos Questions

1. When should I book a fall family photo session?
When it comes to scheduling fall family photos in Fresno, the earlier the better. October and November usually bring the nicest weather though October can still feel a little warm and November sometimes brings rain. If you’re hoping to use your photos for holiday cards, aim to have your session scheduled at least two weeks before you plan to order them. Many of my membership clients actually reserve their fall sessions in July, and I typically open up the remaining spots to my email list at the end of August, right after school starts.
2. How long will the session last?
A fall family photo session lasts 60-ish minutes with me for a full session.
3. Do you offer mini sessions or only full sessions in the fall?
This fall, I’m offering full sessions Monday through Saturday, half sessions on Wednesdays in September and October at Woodward Park, and mini sessions just once, on Sunday, November 9th.
4. Where do your fall sessions usually take place? (parks, orchards, downtown, at-home, etc.)
All around the Fresno area, the most popular photo spots tend to shift from year to year. Favorites like Woodward Park, Lost Lake, and the nearby trails are always a popular choice, but if you’re looking for something more unique, we can style your session like my real life magic sessions where we capture your family doing the things you truly love together.

5. Do you photograph extended families during the fall season?
Yes! Extended family sessions tend to be popular in summer and during Thanksgiving week when everyone is in town. Reach out to me to get your extended family session booked early so we can pick the best time for everyone!
6. What should we wear for fall family photos?
Both fall colors and neutrals photograph beautifully, it just depends on the look you want. I always recommend thinking about how you’ll use your photos. If rich fall tones complement your home decor, choose the autumn vibes. If your space leans more neutral or light, choosing softer tones will give you a timeless look that feels natural in your home year-round.
7. Are there certain colors or patterns that photograph best in fall?
I love creams, whites, navy, burgundy, denim, mauve, mustard. Classic plaids and stripes are great and timeless. You can shop some of my recommended looks here.
8. Do you help with outfit planning or have a style guide?
Yes! With every client, I provide guidance to help coordinate outfits, share recommendations, and make the planning process as simple and stress-free as possible.
9. Can we do outfit changes during the session?
I usually don’t recommend outfit changes during a session. It can break up the flow, and most kids aren’t big fans of changing clothes mid-shoot. Plus, planning a second set of outfits can add extra stress. If you really want to, you’re welcome to (I have a pop-up changing tent!), but keep in mind that any time spent changing will cut into your session time.
10. What happens if it rains or the weather changes?
Fall weather can be unpredictable, so I typically make the call on rescheduling about two hours before the session if needed.
11. What if my kids won’t cooperate during the session?
I’m always mindful of capturing those classic smiles of your child looking at the camera, and I’ll let you know if we haven’t gotten that shot yet. But I also make sure to capture sweet, interactive lifestyle moments. Oftentimes those candid, heartfelt interactions are the photos my clients end up loving even more than the posed smiles.
12. Do you bring props, or should we bring our own?
You’re welcome to bring props if you’d like! My sessions are usually simple, just a blanket on the ground or a stool for sitting poses, but if you have a specific theme in mind, we can chat about it and I can help you plan the props. One thing I’ve found is that to make a setup look intentional and polished, you often need more props than you think.
13. Can we include our pets in the photos?
Absolutely! I’m always happy to have fur babies join your session. I have a few locations I recommend for clients with dogs that tend to be less crowded. Just keep in mind that bringing a dog is a bit like having an extra little one at the session, it can be fun, but also adds a layer of coordination. If you really want your pup included, an at-home session usually works best, letting them be in a few shots while also giving them freedom to roam and relax.
14. Do you recommend morning or evening for the best light in fall?
I love the warm, cozy glow of fall sunset light, it’s perfect for capturing that autumn vibe. But if mornings work better for your little ones, an early morning session (not too early after the time change) provides a soft, clean, neutral light that looks beautiful any time of year.
15. How soon will we see our photos?
You can expect your full gallery within two weeks of your session.
16. Will our images be edited?
Your gallery will include all of the final, fully edited images. For a 60-minute session, that’s typically around 50–75 photos. I don’t provide unedited or RAW files.
17. Can we order prints, holiday cards, or gifts from you?
Yes! I have an online shop linked to your gallery where you can order prints, cards, and more. I also add a few special items during Black Friday shopping that make great gifts.
18. Do we get digital files, or do you sell them separately?
Digital files are not included with your session fee and are purchased separately. After you’ve viewed your gallery slideshow of all the edited images, you can decide how many digital files you’d like to purchase.
19. Do you work with families who have toddlers or newborns during fall sessions?
Yes! Toddlers usually love being outdoors, and many newborns do too. I’m happy to offer guidance on clothing that works best for babies under 3 months. I often suggest bodysuits and simple outfits with no collars, so we can capture those adorable, smooshy little faces.
20. What if we feel awkward in front of the camera?
Here’s a little secret… most people feel this way, even I do when we get our family photos taken! I guide you every step of the way with prompts and fun ideas, and I always let you know at the start of the session that if I go quiet, it’s because what you’re doing is already magical.
21. Can we do a mix of posed and candid shots?
Yep! I always start with a classic everyone-looking-at-the-camera shot, and I may capture a few more of those as kids get comfortable with me. The majority of your gallery, though, will feature candid and thoughtfully planned moments that show your family interacting naturally.
22. Do you photograph in-home fall sessions?
I love an in-home fall session! We can capture your family playing and living your everyday life inside, then head out to the backyard for some fun outdoor shots. Photos should celebrate life as it is right now, with all its beautiful, messy glory.
