Extended Family Photo Session FAQs

An extended family photo session is the perfect way to capture your loved ones across generations. These sessions bring grandparents, grandchildren, aunts and uncles, and more together to capture fun-filled and unforgettable moments.

What is an extended family photo session?

An extended family photo session includes multiple family groupings, typically grandparents, their immediate children, and their individual families. It’s a photo session that features more than one immediate family group.

How do you coordinate colors for an extended family photo session?

For my clients, I recommend that they head to Pinterest and type in “fall/spring/winter/summer color palette” and search through a variety of palettes. Once you find a palette of colors you like, send it to everyone and ask them to design their family around that color palette. Usually, if everyone follows that guideline, the clothing will all balance out in a larger group. You can also create a Pinterest board with lots of clothing ideas to help people visually see how a color scheme can come together. Here’s a link to my current extended family session we’re planning for December.

How many photos do you get for an extended family photo session?

My extended family photo sessions include all images and are typically 60-90 minutes long. I have a list of groupings I usually follow. Starting with the whole group, grandparent groups, original sibling groups, cousins, etc. This is followed by each individual family getting a mini session with their own family. By the end of the session, you’ll have enough photos of each group that grandparents can have a cohesive gallery wall or photo album of everyone in high-quality images.

How to price an extended family photo session?

Extended family photo sessions are a lot more work than a regular family session. I typically stay in one spot and swap out groupings and poses versus moving around and getting lots of location variety. There’s more work involved in keeping track of groupings and getting the best shot of a larger group of people. There’s also a lot more work with editing an extended family session, more head swaps and detail edits to make sure everyone has a few options for that perfect shot of everyone looking at the camera and looking their best. This means that extended family sessions are on the higher side of the price range for family photos.

Planning an extended family session can seem daunting, but with the right guidance and preparation, it becomes a seamless, fun experience. From helping you choose the perfect color palette to capturing every family member, I aim to create a gallery that showcases the unique relationships of your family. If you’re in need of Fresno extended family photos, I’d love to help you create unforgettable images that will bring smiles to your faces for generations to come.
