Worried Your House Isn’t “Photo Ready”? Read This First.
Picture this: You’re getting ready for your in-home newborn photo session, and in the whirlwind of new parenthood, your house is a delightful mess of baby gear and unwashed laundry. Sound familiar? You’re not alone, and I promise, you don’t need to scramble for a spotless home when it comes to capturing these precious moments. Let me share a little story that might just put your mind at ease.

There was a session where I needed a bit more room for the perfect shot, and the family graciously opened their bathroom door to reveal piles of clothes strewn about. We laughed it off, and I assured them it’s completely normal. The secret to a successful shoot? Focusing on the spaces with the best light, not the cleanest floors!

Why Your Home Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect for an In-Home Newborn Photo Session
Many new parents feel pressure to create a picture-perfect home for their in-home newborn photo session, but that expectation can add unnecessary stress. My philosophy is simple: prioritize comfort and focus on spaces with great light. When photographing in your home, it’s all about capturing the natural essence of your family, and that includes the wonderfully imperfect realities of new parent life.

1. Don’t Sweat the Mess
Every family has a messy spot, and that’s perfectly normal. The number one thing to remember is: You just had a baby! My advice? Pick one or two rooms to tidy up, grab a laundry basket, dump the odds and ends into it, and stash it away in another room. That’s it. You’re done.
2. Light It Up
When it comes to photography, light is your best friend. Try to locate the areas in your home that are brightest during your scheduled session. If you’re unsure, don’t worry, I will help spot those golden spots when I arrive.
3. Flexibility is Key
I often move items or furniture around to optimize a shot, and I like to assure parents: it’s okay! We’re working together to create a safe, beautiful space. Remember, a relaxed and comfortable environment reflects in the photos.
4. Personal Comfort
Your home is where you’re most at ease, and that comfort will shine through in your photos. Having your personal belongings close by can help you feel more relaxed knowing you have anything you might need during our session at our fingertips. No worrying you forgot that one cute bow or blanket!
5. Less is More
Focus on enjoying the session and being present with your little one. Connection, not perfection, is what we’re after. Think morning snuggles, sleepy stretches, and those loving glances you exchange with your family.

The Goal Isn’t a Perfect House, It’s Real Memories
Preparing your home for an in-home newborn photo session is more about capturing the love and bond you share with your baby than achieving an immaculate setting. By focusing on comfort, light, and connection, you’ll allow genuine moments to unfold naturally, which makes for the most treasured photographs. Embrace the beautiful chaos of new parenthood, it’s your family’s unique story.
