I am documenting your family as they are right now, so keep it real by wearing what you’re most comfortable in and by being yourself. I recommend steering away from t-shirts with logos or bold patterns. Bright colors are hard to photograph correctly so I recommend avoiding those as well. Think about how you want to use these pictures. Are you wanting them for a Holiday card only? Do you want to hang them on your walls at home? What colors will work best and compliment how you use these images?
Moms, I want you to feel beautiful and comfortable. Look through your closet and find what you feel the most beautiful in, right now. Wear that and then find clothes for your spouse and children that compliment, not match. I tend to think about a theme like, edgy, whimsical, fancy, classic, rustic, spring tones…etc. to help me get a cohesive look without being matchy matchy. Flowy skirts and dresses are always fun to photograph because they create movement easily. Add layers with your clothes to make it more interesting. Don’t go out and buy a hat if you never wear hats, but think about scarves, vests, jewelry, cardigans, suspenders for little boys, ties, bows, headbands, jackets, just a little something to make an outfit more interesting.
If you want to make this a whole event for yourself, book a session to get your hair and make up done. It’s always fun to go a little extra and have is documented. You will look great even if you don’t choose to go that route, but when doing your make up, put it on just a little heavier than you might normally. This will help prevent you from looking washed out in the images and make sure it shows up and it looks like you have on make up.
I think figuring out the clothing is so much fun, and I’m always happy to give my opinion if you send me a pic or question. I try to pick out things from my family’s closet and challenge myself to only buy 1-2 items to help round out our look when we get family photos done. What questions do you have about what to wear to a family session?
So helpful – find outfits can be so stressful, this will help so many.
